I'd like to introduce you to our two fermented sisters.
On the left is Kombucha and on the right is Kefir.
They both promise us to live happily every after if taken everyday...which we do cheerfully. We turn our kefir into morning fruit and/or green smoothies and we drink small glasses of the kombucha throughout the day.
Kefir is a fermented milk product...very similar to yogurt. You know how yogurt is good for you? Well, if yogurt is good for you, then kefir is outstanding for you. It's got all of the good stuff (probiotics) that yogurt has but WAY more. And it's incredibly easy to make.
Kombucha is supposed to cure whatever ails ya. It's widely used as a "long life elixir" in most of Asia. That mushroom thing floating on top is called a SCOBY (AKA symbiotic culture of bacterial yeast). I know, it's weird. But it tastes good. It's a lot like fizzy sweet tea. You know how them Texans love their sweet tea!
The kefir ferments in 24 hours, while we have to wait an entire week before our kombucha is finished. With both, you just add more (milk and tea, respectively) in the same 'ol jar and stick them back in the cupboard.
1.5 c. kefir
1 c. kombucha
1 c. greens (preferably kale or chard)
Handful of frozen fruit such as strawberries and blueberries
Couple of ice cubes
Yummy! Ages 33 to 1.5 enjoy this every morning.
