Rowan's First Bike Ride

Took little Rowan in our bike trailer yesterday for a ride to the library. Riley was glad to have the company and Rowan was so happy taking in all of the sights speeding by her.

Sourdough Hotcakes

We've passed on our sourdough starter to many a friend. And many have wanted to know how to turn their precious "sludge" into hotcakes (or bread, or anything else yummy and sourdough related). Here it is for everyone out there carrying on the Saturday morning tradition of yummy sourdough hotcakes.

The night before:
Add 2 cups water and 2 cups flour to your "sludge".
Let sit out overnight at room temperature (the longer the better)

The morning of:
Take out a dollop of sludge to go back into fridge for next time.
Add 1 egg, 1 tsp. salt, 1 Tbs. sugar, 1/3 c. oil, stir.
Mix 2-3 tsp. of baking soda in a little bit of water, add.

Well Put.

"At the center of all religions is the idea of Karma. You Know, what you put out comes back to you: an eye for an eye . . . Along comes this idea called Grace to upend all that . . . Love interrupts, if you like, the consequences of your actions, which in my case is very good news indeed . . . I'd be in big trouble if Karma was going to be my judge. I'm holding out for Grace. I'm holding out that Jesus took my sins onto the Cross." - Bono

Blueberries for...

all the Rickstrew's! "Plink, Plop, Plink, Plop"....or so goes the story Blueberries for Sal. Riley was just like that little one in that sweet book, minus the bear sighting...well...and he didn't get lost. BUT-- more blueberries went into his belly than in the bucket. We treated ourselves to some family fun after our 12.3 mile run today and went to our local organic blueberry patch. Pick all you all you want...whatever you want to take home is $4.50 per lb. Rows and rows of blueberries.

We saw Riley's "wombmates" there...Miles and Rogue. Their mamas and I were all pregnant together and swam every day at the Arcata Community Pool. Each baby was born within three weeks of each other. This was close to a dream for Riley....rows upon rows of ready and ripe blueberries. We have three bushes at home, which we pick every morning for our breakfast oatmeal...but there are always many we must leave behind to ripen for the next day. At this sunny patch...we didn't have to leave anything behind...they were all juicy, plump, dark blue...and ready for the pickin'!

All in was a wonderful day.
We left the patch with 4 lbs. of blueberries!

Last long run before the half marathon

We live in such a beautiful place. And it is mornings like today where it is obvious. Pristine blue skies, no wind, clear and calm waters....I wish I had my camera with me for the run to document the beauty that surrounded us. We dropped Tami's car off at St. Mary's catholic church in the Arcata Bottoms (where there are miles and miles of farm roads with nothing other than cows to think about) and all drove north, practically to Westhaven. We parked our car at Crannell Road and started our run there.

There is a trail, called Hammond Trail, which runs parallel from this point to Arcata.

12.3 miles and one hour and fifty minutes later...we were starving! We drove into McKinleyville and found the nearest taco truck. By the way...Riley was AWESOME!!! 2 hours in that talking...just looking around and watching the world pass him by. Tom pushed him, which is no easy feat since our "little man" weighs about 40 lbs.

Messy mexican....the best treat after such an exhilarating and exhausting experience!

This child loves....

Kefir!!!! He can hardly get enough. This morning we blended it with strawberries, bananas, strawberry lemonade, and flax seed oil. It was so yummy!

A Child's Interpretation of American Art

We have a wonderful book (from Grandpa and Gigi in Texas) of Norman Rockwell paintings set to the lyrics of "the Grand 'Ole Flag." We've been reading it quite a bit this summer. This morning when we got to this particular painting, Riley let me into his little three year old brain and the way he sees the world.

Riley: Look, mama...the girls. They're sad.
Me: I know. What do you think they are sad about?
Riley: They forgot their sand toys.
Me: They did?
Riley: Yeah, they did. They forgot them at home. All those girls are crying for their toys.
Me: Ohhhh....

(We'll address the real issues of this incredible painting when Riley is able to understand....)

Hurdy Gurdy Creek

Spent the good part of the week on the Smith River...or thereabouts. Met with Steve Patterson AKA "BFG", Kevin Sutter AKA Kevlar Sue, and two other friends.
The weather was perfect...warm and sunny...but not too hot to warrant needing shade. BFG knows these parts better than anyone so we stayed off the beaten path at night and swam in secret spots by day. And by that, I mean, don't ask.
Riley still naps for several hours during the middle of the we pitched a fort for him and he slept in style. When he went to sleep, the goggles went on, the towels came off and we swam for hours.
Around the campfire...we shared stories about we all love Him, want more of Him, and what He has done in our lives. How awesome is the body of Christ-- that upon meeting other believers for the first time (Pami....and Rex, sort of) tears and laughter come easy.
"We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words." 1 Cor. 2:12-13

Jon's Wedding

Had a blast in Mendocino last weekend for Jon and Crystal's wedding. The pictures will tell the story (albeit out of order).
